Local knowledge

Hill Inlet looks best at low tide. Only Ocean Rafting can get into the inlet at all tides. The other tours see it around mid tide, so check the tide times if the swirling sands are what you are after. For the best view of all, take a scenic flight at low tide.

People set on the famous open-ocean reef get disappointed when they book an island snorkel by mistake. If the outer reef is the goal, make sure the tour actually goes there.

How To Choose A Whitsundays Tour

If you wantWhat to check
Hill Inlet's swirling sandsThe patterns show best at low tide. Ocean Rafting gets in at any tide. Other tours see the inlet around mid tide.
The most beach timeBeach day tours such as ZigZag give about 4 hours on Whitehaven Beach. Fast boats split the day between stops.
The real Great Barrier ReefIsland snorkelling is on fringing reef with soft corals in the shallows. The outer reef has the full range of corals but is a longer, pricier trip.
A trip that goes aheadOuter reef trips are cancelled or changed in strong wind: about 20 knots and up for smaller boats, 30 knots and up for larger boats.
To avoid seasicknessTake medication if you are worried, sit outside looking at the horizon, stay low and in the middle of the boat, and avoid screens and reading.
A tour for kidsCheck the age rules. Lady Enid is adults only and the Snorkelling And Sailing Tour is 12 and over.
Speed or a slow dayFast boats fit more stops into the day. Sailing boats are slower and more relaxed.
To swim in summerStinger season is November to May. Wear a stinger suit and check it is included.
Local knowledge

The fringing reef around the islands has a lot of soft corals growing in shallow water, attached to the island seabed. The outer reef grows from the seabed up and has the full diverse range of corals.

Past the outer islands it is unprotected water, and big swells build in sustained winds. That is why outer reef trips get cancelled or rerouted, so have a back-up day if the reef is the main reason you came.

Best Whitsundays Tours FAQ

What is the best tour to Whitehaven Beach?

It depends what you want from the day. ZigZag Whitsundays gives the most time on the beach, about 4 hours at the south end. Ocean Rafting is best for Hill Inlet and its swirling sands. The Whitehaven Beach Half Day, from $155, is the cheapest way there.

Which tour is best for seeing Hill Inlet?

Ocean Rafting, as it is the only tour that can get into Hill Inlet at any tide. The other tours see the inlet from the lookout at around mid tide. For the best view of all, take a scenic flight at low tide.

Can you see the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach in one day?

Yes. Viper Whitsundays visits Hill Inlet and southern Whitehaven Beach and snorkels the outer reef in the same day. In winds over 20 knots it snorkels around the islands instead. The Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef combo pairs a ZigZag day tour with a 60 minute flight over the reef.

What is the cheapest tour to Whitehaven Beach?

The Whitehaven Beach Half Day from $155, then Spirit of Whitsundays (GSL Marine) from $159. Prices are per adult and can change by date.

Which Whitsundays tour is best for families?

ZigZag Whitsundays and Purely Whitehaven. Both are relaxed beach days at Whitehaven Beach. Check the age rules before booking, as some tours, such as Lady Enid, are adults only.

What is the best fast boat tour in the Whitsundays?

Thundercat and Fury are the fast boat picks for a thrill ride, and both visit Hill Inlet Lookout and Whitehaven Beach. Ocean Rafting is the fast boat for Hill Inlet at any tide, and Viper adds the outer reef.

Should I do a day tour or an overnight tour?

A day tour suits most visitors with a few days in Airlie Beach. An overnight sailing tour adds a night anchored in the islands and more snorkel stops. Overnight tours start from $453.15 on Matador.

Are the reviews on this site real?
