Why you need a licence

Queensland law requires a marine licence to drive any boat with an engine of more than 4.5 kW. A current licence from another Australian state is accepted, and so is a recognised overseas licence. An unlicensed person can only drive with a licensed person on board who is able to take control straight away.

Local knowledge

With a hire boat, know your limits. Safety always comes first. Check the wind and the tides before you leave the ramp, stay inside the area the operator shows you, and if it looks rougher than you're used to, stay in closer and fish the bay instead.

Bareboat Charters: What It Means In The Whitsundays

A bareboat is a yacht, sailing catamaran or power catamaran hired with no crew. The people who hire it are the skipper and crew, and they live on board for the length of the charter. The Whitsundays is the main bareboat region in Australia, with 74 islands and more than 40 anchorages inside sheltered water.

FactDetail

Local knowledge

Bareboating is great for families and groups of friends who have basic to advanced boat skills. You get your own boat, your own bays and your own timetable.

Over the years there have been a lot of incidents with guests on bareboats, and nearly all of them come down to simple mistakes. Always listen to the charter company's instructions on where to use moorings and where to anchor.

  • I've seen guests go through all three anchors on a boat because they let them go instead of winding them back in.
  • Boats anchor too close to Whitehaven Beach and end up sitting on the sand when the tide goes out.

Bareboat Rules And Limits

Each charter company sets its own safety rules and enforces them. They are explained at the briefing and are a condition of the hire.

RuleDetail
Cruising areaA set boundary around the islands, roughly from Hayman and Hook Islands in the north to Shaw Island in the south. Each company sets its own.
Outer reefBareboats are not allowed to go to the outer Great Barrier Reef
RadioCheck-ins with the base by radio at the start and end of each day, with weather and tide updates
OvernightOnly at the anchorages and moorings the company approves
Moorings and anchorsUse a mooring where one is provided. Anchor on sand, never on coral.
TidesThe tidal range reaches about 4 m on spring tides, so depth at anchor changes a lot between high and low water
FishingOnly in the zones where the Marine Park allows it

Whitsundays Boat And Yacht Hire FAQ

Do you need a boat licence to hire a boat in the Whitsundays?

It depends on the boat. A trailer boat such as the one from A1 Boat Hire Airlie Beach needs a current marine licence, because Queensland requires one for any engine over 4.5 kW. A bareboat yacht charter does not need a licence, but the charter company expects boating experience and gives a 3 to 4 hour briefing. A private charter needs nothing, because a skipper drives.

Can you hire a boat for one day in Airlie Beach?

Yes. A1 Boat Hire Airlie Beach hires its 6.15 m boat by the day for $600 to licensed skippers. Without a licence, a private charter with a skipper is the one day option. Bareboat yachts are hired for several nights, not single days.

Can you take a hire boat to Whitehaven Beach?

Yes. The A1 Boat Hire boat can go to Whitehaven Beach and Hook Island, inside the operator's boundary map. Bareboats can visit Whitehaven Beach as well. Fishing is not allowed there, and boats need to allow for the tide when anchoring off the beach.

Can you take a bareboat to the Great Barrier Reef?

Not to the outer reef. Bareboats stay inside a set cruising area around the Whitsunday Islands. The islands are inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and have their own fringing reefs for snorkelling. The outer reef is reached on a day tour, an overnight stay or a scenic flight.

What does bareboat mean?

Bareboat means the boat is hired bare of crew. The people hiring it skipper it, crew it, cook on it and sleep on it. The boat itself is fully equipped.

How much does it cost to hire a yacht in the Whitsundays?

Published starting rates are about $560 a night for a sailing yacht and about $660 a night for a sailing catamaran, for the whole boat. A security bond, a damage waiver, fuel, the Marine Park fee and food are extra. Most companies have a 3 to 5 night minimum.

Can you hire a yacht with a skipper?

Yes. Bareboat companies can put a sail guide on board for a half day, a full day or the whole charter, at about $300 for a half day or $650 a day. For a single day out with a skipper and host, a private charter is the simpler choice.

Is a yacht or a catamaran better for the Whitsundays?

Catamarans are the choice of most families and larger groups, because they are wider, more stable and have more cabins. Sailing yachts cost less per night and suit couples and keen sailors. Power catamarans suit crews who do not want to sail at all.

What is the cheapest way to hire a boat in the Whitsundays?

For a group that holds a licence, a day boat at $600 split between up to 5 people is the lowest cost per person. For several days, a small sailing yacht in the low season has the lowest nightly rate. A shared day tour costs less than any of them.
