Whitsundays Dive Sites For Certified Divers

These sites are for certified divers with their own boat or a bareboat. The best known are around Hook Island and Hayman Island, at the northern end of the Whitsundays, where the fringing reefs and rock formations are at their best.

Dive siteWhereDepthVisibilityWhat to expect
The WoodpileNorth-east point of Hook Island5 to 30 m4 to 15 mThe best wall dive in the Whitsundays, with caves and rock ledges deeper down and coral bommies off the wall. Strong currents around the point. Do not dive it on spring tides, and pick a day with little wind.
The PinnaclesNorth-east Hook Island3 to 18 m9 to 15 mHard corals close to what is seen on the outer reef, with large bommies that reach the surface. Manta rays visit from May to September.
Manta Ray BayHook Island3 to 15 m3 to 15 mGood for newer divers, with excellent wind protection. Valleys, caves and tunnels, a lot of fish and resident Maori wrasse. Manta rays from May to September.
Mackerel BayEast Hook Island5 to 12 m2 to 10 mShallow diving through scattered bommies, small canyons and ledges. Protected in northerly winds. Avoid it in southerlies. Visibility varies.
Blue Pearl BayHayman Island3 to 18 m3 to 15 mShallow ledges dropping to a 15 metre wall with caves and canyons, and coral gardens towards Dolphin Point. Strong currents at Castle Rock: stay away from it at all times.
Dolphin PointNorth-west point of Hayman Island5 to 18 m3 to 15 mLarge rock slabs, swim-throughs, big bommies and big fish. It needs a calm day because of the currents. Sharks are seen here now and then.
Cateran BayNorth Border Island2 to 12 m2 to 12 mDive straight from the moorings in light winds. Gullies and ledges either side of the bay entrance. Currents pick up at the entrance, most of all on the north-west tip.
Langford SpitLangford Island3 to 15 m2 to 10 mA sandy bottom dotted with bommies, sloping from the beach to 15 metres. Strong tidal currents, so take care. Good for drift dives.
Local knowledge

Take care at Langford. The current there is strong and it runs most of the time, which is what makes it a good drift dive. I've seen it first hand: divers swept away fast in poor visibility.

Always dive with a buddy, and check the tides before you get in the water.

Diving Bait Reef

Bait Reef is the closest of the outer reefs to Airlie Beach and the best known outer reef dive in the Whitsundays. It is a trip for private boats in settled weather.

FactDetail
WhereAbout 65 km north-east of Airlie Beach, beyond the Whitsunday Islands
Getting thereBy private boat. Bareboat charters are not allowed to go to the outer reef.
Moorings12 public moorings on the south-west side of the reef
ZoneA green zone. No fishing or collecting.
The Stepping StonesA line of large coral bommies along the south-western edge
Manta Ray Drop OffA wall that falls away to about 75 metres, with gorgonians, soft corals and sea whips. Strong currents: dive it at slack water on neap tides.
Marine lifeManta rays, most often in winter, plus Maori wrasse, reef sharks and turtles
Reef conditionThe Stepping Stones lost a lot of coral in Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017. The Reef Authority has been replanting coral there since October 2021, in 5 to 9 metres of water.

Scuba Diving From Airlie Beach FAQ

Can beginners scuba dive in Airlie Beach?

Yes. A first dive needs no licence or experience. On the Whitsunday Dive Adventures day tour, first-timers have a lesson on the boat, then one dive of about 30 minutes with two students to each instructor. First dives are also offered at the Reefworld pontoon on the outer reef for ages 16 and over.

How much does scuba diving cost in Airlie Beach?

The Whitsunday Dive Adventures day tour is from $450 per person, for either two dives for certified divers or a first dive and snorkel for beginners. On the Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour, the day trip is from $329 and a dive is added on the day for $135 certified or $175 for a first dive.

Can you scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach?

Yes. The Whitsunday Islands are inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, so the island dive sites are on the reef. For the outer reef, the Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour goes to Hardy Reef, about 3 hours each way, and dives are added on the day.

Do you need a licence to scuba dive in the Whitsundays?

Not for a first dive with an instructor. A certification, starting with Open Water, is needed to dive as a certified diver, and a current dive card is needed to hire gear.

Is there a dive shop in Airlie Beach?

Yes. Aqua Dive is at Shop 13, Coral Sea Marina, open 7 days from 8:00am to 4:00pm. It hires dive gear, fills tanks and does servicing and repairs.

Can you scuba dive from a bareboat charter?

Yes, if you are certified. Gear is hired from Aqua Dive with a current dive card. Charter companies limit the number of tanks on board, and bareboats are not allowed to go to the outer reef, so diving is at the island sites.

What is the best dive site in the Whitsundays?

The Woodpile on Hook Island is rated the best wall dive, and The Pinnacles nearby has hard corals close to those on the outer reef. Manta Ray Bay suits newer divers. Each needs the right wind and tide.

What will you see scuba diving in the Whitsundays?

Hard and soft corals, sea turtles, Maori wrasse, groupers, clownfish and schools of fusiliers. Manta rays visit Hook Island from May to September, and white tip reef sharks are sometimes seen.

How long after diving can you fly?

Allow 24 hours. Whitsunday Dive Adventures asks every diver to confirm they are not flying within 24 hours after diving.

How old do you have to be to scuba dive in the Whitsundays?

The minimum age is 12 on the Whitsunday Dive Adventures day tour, and 16 for dives at the Reefworld pontoon on the outer reef.
