Whitehaven Beach

Matador Whitsundays Tour visits Whitehaven Beach for around 2 hours. During this time you embark on a bush-walk from Tongue Point (northern end of Whitehaven), this walk takes around 15 minutes, once at the top you will experience Whitehaven Beach above on the viewing platform. This breathtaking view from here lets you see all 7 km of the beach as well as the world-famous swirling sands that form the inlet

Snorkelling Coral Reefs

During your 2 day tour, you will get at least 2 opportunities to snorkel the coral-filled bays on the coastal fringes of the islands. Here you can see turtles, Maori wrasse, batfish, parrot fish, clown fish (Nemo) plus plenty more! in most bays, the coral starts close to shore and is easily accessible by the small tender boats. For nonconfident swimmers, there are noodles and flotation devices available for safety.

An amazing two days! The amount of beautiful things I saw on this trip was genuinely astonishing and there was a great range of activities and stops. Dave, Alesia and Carys were an excellent team and kept us informed, safe, entertained and very well fed! We were the last group on the beach so got to see it empty which was brilliant. Sleeping under the stars was an absolute highlight of the East Coast for me. Really recommend!

The most beautiful place and one of the BEST experiences! The whole team are so wonderful and couldn’t have done more to make sure we got the most from the trip. We saw every different wildlife you can imagine in the spectacular turquoise ocean. I think it’s amazing value for money getting to go to many locations to spend time on beaches, snorkel and enjoy an incredible night under the stars! And this is all with a constant flow of delicious food and refreshments throughout! Would love to go back already!

Let me share with you my experience with Matador. The captain, Dave, was terrible with the crew members but also with us.We didn't pay for this excursion to be yelled at and feel like we were in the army. This is unacceptable.Safety conditions were not always met and we had several scares. Unplanned hikes done in flip flops while the team itself did not know the path we were going to take. Undeveloped path on which we had to walk alone because the supervisors were not waiting.Unsupervised snorkeling. Also, the spots weren't the best. The mental pressure was high because we always had to hurry for everything, the captain took the liberty of reprimanding us.We wish courage to the other members of the crew, who tried everything to make the excursion more enjoyable. The sailing trip is a must but don't do it with Matador.

We had a great time spotting many turtles and whales. Also, we were the first people on the whiteheaven beach and had enough time to relax. Molly was a great supervisor for us. The snorkelling was alright for touristic purposes.

Had the best time on this tour, would highly recommend. We were spoilt with amazing conditions and got to see a tonne of wildlife. The snorkelling was something else altogether. Getting to see Whitehaven beach and travelling around Whitsundays didn’t feel like real life and it was an amazing experience. The crew were great! Milga and Alessia were so friendly and answered all of our niggling questions. They also prepared the best spaghetti bolognese for us and all sent us into a food coma cause we couldn’t stop eating.Thoroughly enjoyed this tour and wish I could do it all over again

Did a 2 day 1 night trip in March. We got beautiful weather and the snorkelling and beach trip were stunning. Overall the boat was a bit run down and shabby, it wasn’t very comfortable for sleeping either. The food was top class for both days, however the captain is not as funny as he thinks he is, I have seen other reviews on here about his personality and while he was knowledgeable and fun at times, sometimes he was just plain rude.

The tour was not bad and we got to see some nice beaches. However, Dave (the captain) was the rudest and most impolite person I have ever met in my life. It felt like in each sentence he spoke he insulted someone on the boat (not in a funny way, just straight disrespect, also towards his own crew). We asked the crew the same day how they keep up with him, because they were very friendly and fun to talk to. I would rate the overall experience better, but since the person in charge left such a bad vibe on the boat, one star seems more than fair.

Great experience and would highly recommend this tour. The crew, captained by Dave, was incredible. I’ve seen some negative reviews on Dave, but he’s hilarious and a great guide. People who don’t speak English as a first language might find his sarcastic humor harder to understand… but he’s a joking guy who puts on a good time. You’ll have plenty of time to snorkel, you’ll go to the Hill Inlet Lookout, and at the beach below should have a good shot at seeing stingrays. The food is plentiful and at night they put on the blue lights so you can watch the dolphins hunt squid right by your boat.At night it was very hot in the boat, but I don’t think that’s tour specific, you’d probably face this problem on any boat this time of year. We also got unlucky with the rain at night, or else you could’ve slept on the deck outside where you get a cooler breeze. After 3 weeks in Australia this is definitely one of my highlights!

Exceptional experience! We had the opportunity to go on a 2 day cruise on Matador with Dave as captain and Savannah & Chris as deckhands, everything was great. The landscapes, the dives, the people. 3 dives in total for us in magnificent places. The meals were very good and the staff attentive. Thank you for everything !

We had a lovely trip. It was definitely the highlight of my 4 months east coast trip. We swam with turtles, saw sharks and stingrays, snorkeled with fishes bigger than myself,… The crew was very very nice and the captain showed us a special place and told us the aboriginal history of the place. I would definitely recommend it!!

This trip deserves 5 stars because it was magical!beginning with the crew they were all such sweet and funny people that cared for our wellbeing and made the trip special and unforgettable. Especially Dave the captain has my heart. It is very rare to meet a tour guide that is NATURALLY funny and truly knows the best spots for us costumers to visit. Also just the way he thinks is inspiring and you can learn a lot from him. I sadly read some negative comments referring to Dave and I just can say that only people without the ability to understand good Humor and people that just can’t have a good time without finding someone to blame for something wrote these comments.Moving forward to the activities I went snorkelling quiet a few times before this trip but I NEVER saw so many interesting animals and corals than I saw during this trip. Sharks, turtles, rays, dolphins swam either next to our boat or right underneath me. The corals were colourful and huge!Besides the snorkelling we visited Whitehaven beach at the right time so that we had the whole beach for ourselves. We slept on the deck of the boat and saw some beautiful stars and the mesmerising sunrise the next day.The food war prepared with love (thanks to Gus) and nobody had to be hungry at any point because there always were enough snacks in between.I also read some negative comments about food, toilets, noises etc. and I just want to say if you want to have a huge luxurious toilet with golden ornaments, caviar for lunch and a place so quiet that you could hear a needle falling to the ground, maybe you’re right and a adventurous sailing tour that allows you to connect with nature and feel free is not the right trip for you.But if you are keen to see Australias beautiful flora and fauna and sail with a funny and caring crew that knows the BEST spots, the matador boat should be one of your future places to stay!

Solo traveller from Canada and had an amazing experience on the Matador. Easy to make friends, amazing crew, and fun activities!! Captain Dave was excellent and everyone on the tour really enjoyed him. Gus was an amazing chef we ate really well. Highlights were having Whitehaven beach completely to ourselves, snorkeling with turtles/sharks and sleeping up on the deck. I would definitely do this tour again!

The positives: The activities of the snorkelling and visiting the Whitsunday islands with this tour are hands down some of the best things you can do in Australia and an incredible experience. Deckhands are top and the food is really as good as it can be on a boat in the sea.The things to mention would be the behaviour of the captain, calling guests/customers retards, gaylords and making insensitive jokes about dead Palestinian children would put anyone off.Sleeping is tough, this should be expected as you’re sharing a cabin with 20+ people. It’s going to be very hot, even more humid and noisy. Nothing they can do for this really but you need to be aware of it.They give a list of everything you should do across the two days but the reality is you won’t do all of them as tides and timings mean not everything can be done so expect to miss out on one or two things from the list. You’ll have a good time, stay away from captain Dave and you’ll have a great time.

We had the most perfect and unreal experience on Matador with the sweetest crew: Dave, Juliet and Kerris. The weather was incredible, so we had two beautiful days on the water including an unforgettable sunset and sunrise from the boat. Sleeping under the stars on the deck was magic, and no words can describe Whitehaven Beach. We give our highest recommendations for this amazing tour with Matador.

The tour was incredible from beginning to end!Great team on board a very big thank you to Captain Dave and skippers Karis and Amin! A crossing a little windy but very pleasant and controlled by the crew! Nothing to say about the quality of the services received! Very good food simple and in quantity, absolutely beautiful snearkling, first come to Whitesunday beach alone or almost for long hours and departure at the best timing to leave just before the massive tourism! Superb cultural experience thanks to our Captain Dave; visit of an Aboriginal sacred place cellar with ancient painting recounting and proving the very ancient presence of the first men on this earth!A big thank you to Dave for his professionalism, his experience, his sense of humor and for sharing his passion with me!I recommend this experience and this crew to all! You won't be disappointed!

What you will see on the tour might be among the best things to do on the East coast. Seeing whales, Whitehaven beach, Hill Inlet and amazing coral is just truly memorable. However, this is a one star review because of the captain of the matador boat, Dave. I already read plenty of reviews on tripadvisor etc., and I can just truly agree that Dave is the MOST rude, unprofessional, mentally abusing and narcissistic person I ever met in my life.It was just completely embarrassing to see how he treated his two fellow crew members (who did an awesome job by the way). He made constantly fun of them and yelled very aggressively at them.I truly hope that someone at Matador Whitsundays will read the online reviews and comes to understanding that Dave is not the person who should be captain on the Matador boat!

Went on the 2 day 1 night trip around the Whitsundays. Great crew onboard, who were mega helpful and had lots of info to share about the Whitsundays. We were able to help with the sailing, were provided with snorkels and wetsuits and went to 2 snorkel spots. We had 3 hours at Whitehaven beach on the second day and watched the sunrise on the way to the beach. There was a good variety of food with spag bol for tea, pasta/potato salad, bread, cheeses and meat for lunch, cereal, bread and spreads for breakfast and tea/coffee biscuits after snorkelling. We also took alcohol which is kept in a cool box. Majority of people on the boat were couples/groups however there were some solo travellers from a variety of counties, this wasn’t a party boat but very chilled out vibes with music playing all trip and people drinking and staying up late if they wanted.

Such a disappointing experience. After the most stressful month at work, my partner and I booked this experience to celebrate our anniversary. When we got to the meeting point (we didn’t eat so we would be on time) the Matador crew showed up after 40 mins of us waiting. We thought we could just forget about the wait and enjoy but as soon as we get to meet the captain, Dave, such a bitter old man, always yelling at staff AND CUSTOMERS aboard. We paid several hundred dollars to be abused by this individual. He asks for help and then treats you like garbage because you don’t know how to do the things he asks you to do (that by the way, we shouldn’t do, we shouldn’t be pedalling and helping them with the sail when we paid for those details to be sorted). The beds are underneath the gathering area, which means it is extremely noisey and really hard to fall asleep. The food was also quite disappointing. Want meat? Bite your tongue because they only provide carbs, no protein.Big shoutout to Molly and Misty (?), so approachable and great to sail with, beautiful staff members, always keen to help, who were also often abused by Dave.So if you read this review, avoid a nuisance and book your experience with another company.

We are two girls from Germany and we had such an incredibly great time with Matador. The crew was super nice and funny and we saw a lot in the two days. The food was top and fresh and we have gained many new impressions in just two days. We had several spots to snorkel and also on the white sunday islands we had enough time to look at the island. There was nice music playing and whether single travelers, couples or students all were welcome. In the evening we let the evening end comfortably on the boat. We have harmonized super and we would recommend this tour 100%.

DO NOT choose the Matador for your cruise. We had a breakdown for 3h30 which meant that we lost a lot of time during our 2 days on the boat, no accommodation or compensation was taken based on this incident. The diving equipment was all damaged. The crew was really unpleasant. Sometimes they even allowed themselves to talk to us aggressively. The snorkeling sites are clearly all damaged. The second we did we clearly stayed 10 minutes watch in hand. In the toilets and the shower most of the time we had no light we had to go there with our portable lamps.Clearly disappointing.

The one star isn't for the trip itself, once it departed. It is for the utter lack of communication around it and the complete silence of the sales team afterwards. When you are asked to come to the dock in time for an early departure, show up in time, get all your gear and sign all the forms and ONLY THEN are told that the tide prevents the boat from leaving the harbour until 4 HOURS later (so you loose half a day on a 2-day trip...), you'd expect something else than a smile and an email informing you of the belated departure after the fact... Tide times are known weeks in advance, the bare minimum communication wise would have been to let us know 48 hours prior that we didn't need to get up this early. We did write multiple times to the team and didn't hear a single word back, except to ask for a review. Well here it is...

Myself and my friend did the 2 day/1 night Matador Whitsunday experience. We both have to admit that without Dave and Louis the experience would’ve fallen much shorter. Fortunately the weather on the first day was amazing and the sights at White Haven beach were incredible. The weather on the second day did come with showers but luckily we were still able to snorkel and see some coral and fish. The sleep on the boat was not the best, however, we were allowed to bring mattresses to the top deck which was cooler than being inside. The food was filling, however, the breakfast we both believe could’ve been better as all that was served was loafs of bread and some spreads, along with a bit of cereal and fruit. The lunches were wraps and sandwiches with a side salad which was filling enough to last until dinner. In the evening Dave cooked up a storm with his signature spag bol dish which was 10/10. I highly recommend for anyone travelling to bring enough water for the two days as the tap water does taste a bit funky and there isn’t huge amounts of it which we kept being reminded of by the captain so limited water available. Louis and Dave really did look after everyone and kept the place clean and ensured everyone was happy during their stay. Their entertainment and humour definitely made the trip and without them the boat would’ve been no fun. The captain unfortunately was very rude and there was a heightened tension whenever he was around, which was a shame. Overall the experience was great and we would recommend to others that the time span of the trip was enough to enjoy the Whitsundays. Thank you again to Louis and Dave for your efforts and for providing us with so much laughter both days. You make a great team.Lots of love Hannah and Amy.

Amazing excursion! Everything was perfect :- the crew is lovely and very funny (thanks Dave, Maeve and Fraser)- the food is amazing : a lot of different choice. We are vegan and they’ve always cooked in a different pot for us, how lovely is that!- the activities are incredible! We’ve been to Whiteheaven beach for 3h, we’ve done 3 snorkeling spots, we saw sharks, little and big fishes, turtles, and ray! Amazing to swim with them!- we all slept together on the deck, with the stars, lovely memory!Absolutely everything was perfect, thank you so much for these amazing 2 days, I’ll never forget it!

Very disappointing trip. No sailing at all.Sleep quarters were hot and unbearable due to heat. No fans. I slept on a hard deck with my pillow and sheet…as no roll up beds are provided. Stench from toilets was disgusting and people using them through out the night. Loud noise every time toilets were flushed.Food was kids camp menu-spaghetti, wraps etc. No drinks just tap water. We brought our own alcohol but drinks couldn’t be kept cold because no sufficient amount of ice 🧊.The deck hand were great 👍 and did their best to make us comfortable. There are much better tours out there.

I wish that I could give 10 stars, because this might have been my best experience in 9 months! We saw dolphins, turtles, and heaps of other sea life. We snorkeled in between schools of fishes, and slept on the deck underneath the stars. We had an awesome group on board, with people from all over the world. Had such a great time on the Matador. Good group and good vibes. Got to snorkel 3 times and watch the sunset on the beach! Had a stop on whitsunday to discover the island. Overall great experience. Good food as well. The only thing I would advice people, is to bring enough water for the trip. Water isn’t the best on the boat.Recommend this cruise.

Has a fantastic time on board with Alex and Milga. It was a nice relaxed two days with a couple of snorkeling adventures and a hike up to Hill Inlet lookout and wander around Betty's beach. Saw a beautiful sunset and sunrise. Saw whales (mother and calf even), sea Eagles, mantra rays, spinner dolphins... We even got the sails up for the trip back to Airlie beach. Alex and Milga couldn't do enough for us. Highly recommended!
